About a week ago, I was moving rocks from the rock border to the other side of the yard so that we can take load them up and take them with us when we move. I had been doing it for a couple of hours and then I came upon a rock that had a spider in one of its holes. It wasn’t just any ole spider either. It was a black widow.
I had read about them but I had never, ever seen one in person in my almost 30 years of life. Now I was staring at one in my own backyard. I killed it but I was a tad disturbed and I stopped moving rocks for the day. In fact, I didn’t move rocks again until this morning.
I was out there for a little bit before I decided to go over to the part of the yard where the spider had been. I finally thought that it was silly that I should avoid going over there. After all, it had taken almost 30 years for me to see one black widow and I figured it would be another 30 before I saw another one.
Boy was I wrong…
I picked up the rock that had been next to the spider rock, turned it over to check for ants and rolly pollies and what did I find instead?
A Black Widow Spider.
I got this picture off the internet. I was too freaked out to get a picture of the one on the rock. I killed it and promptly went and got spider killer stuff and saturated the entire rock wall with it.
I don’t know when I am going to be able to finish moving the rocks. I never would have thought that I would find TWO black widows in my backyard, in one weeks time.
However, when I do go move the rest of the rocks, I will be sure to take my camera…just in case.
